CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION

B. Mission Statement for the Park

1.      What is a mission statement?

A mission statement is an announcement of what an organization desires to be. The statement is the organization’s reason for existence, an explanation of who it serves, and what it wants to accomplish in the future.

Briefly speaking, it is the overview of the purpose of the existence of the park.  A carefully crafted mission statement accurately describes the park and encourages the people who contribute to its success.

2.      How do you write a mission statement for your park?

The following are six essential characteristics that should guide your mission1.

Visionary

A mission statement offers a vision of what an organization wants to be. A visionary mission statement helps people understand what the park is about and how they can contribute to the achievement of the vision.

Broad

A mission statement should not limit a park’s area of service or expertise too narrowly because there is a wide variety of needs that may change rapidly. Thus, a mission statement should be broad enough to allow the park to meet changing needs without frequent revisions of the statement.

Realistic

A mission statement should be realistic. A mission statement that includes everything will not give a clear direction of what the park hopes to achieve. A mission statement filled with unrealistic visions will lose a great deal of credibility. Please remember that the best statements are direct and visible in what they hope to accomplish.

Motivational

A mission statement should be written in an inspiring manner that induces commitment among employees, visitors, and partners about what the park will do and/or produce.

Short & concise

A mission statement should be short and concise (often no longer than 25 words). It is recommended that the mission statement be short enough for an employee to remember it.

Easily understood

A mission statement should be written in plain language that is easy to understand. Try to avoid the use of jargon or terms that are unfamiliar to people.
